But here is what I have learned after years of working in functional medicine: nothing in the body is unrelated.

Over time, I have developed a clinical thinking process that allows me to see how all those pieces connect; how what is happening in one system influences, disrupts, or drives what is happening in another.
When I look at the full picture, one place keeps coming up: the gut.
Not because the gut is the only thing that matters, but because when we support the gut, everything else begins to move. The immune system calms. The brain clears. Hormones regulate. Metabolism shifts. Energy returns.

The Gut-Brain Axis
The gut and brain are in constant communication through a bidirectional signaling highway via the vagus nerve.
Because roughly 90% of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut, gut dysfunction does not stay in the gut; it can show up as anxiety, depression, and poor sleep. Chronic stress then loops back, manifesting in the gut as bloating, cramping, and digestive discomfort.
The two systems are inseparable.
Hormones and the Estrobolome
A specific collection of gut bacteria called the estrobolome is responsible for metabolizing and regulating estrogen.
When the microbiome is imbalanced, estrogen metabolism can be disrupted, contributing to hormonal imbalances, irregular cycles, and conditions such as endometriosis.
The gut also plays a critical role in thyroid hormone conversion and cortisol regulation. For clients navigating hormonal concerns, gut health is always part of the conversation.
Metabolism and the Microbiome
Your microbiome directly influences how you extract energy from food, store fat, and respond to insulin.
This is one reason two people can eat the same diet and experience completely different metabolic outcomes. Their microbiomes may be doing very different things with the same food.
